Team Needs

Team Needs:   OG   OT   SS   CB   DT   DE   QB
The Skinny: The Niners appear to be building a solid nucleus around their run-stifling defense, but they clearly need work in the trenches on the other side of the ball. Mike Singletary and OC Jimmy Raye had intentions of lining up and pounding the rock with Frank Gore, but it just didn't work whenever they tried it. The Niners have a few solid pieces on their line in LT Joe Staley, G Dave Baas, and C Eric Heitmann, but the RG and RT spots could use an upgrade to get them where Samurai Mike wants them to be. Also on their wish list - a big, gap-plugging NT. Aubrayo Franklin was serviceable in this role, but if they can find a big two-gapper early on, they will snatch him up.
4/15 Update: The Niners added backup QB David Carr and CB Karl Paymah. Other than that, not much activity this offseason. They did lost WR Arnaz Battle and OT Tony Pashos.

Mock Draft

1 -13. SS Earl Thomas, Texas
The Skinny: Safety Taylor Mays or cornerback Joe Haden could be options here, but we have Longhorn Earl Thomas pegged for the 49ers. Offensive tackle could be addressed at this spot as well.

1 -17. OT Anthony Davis, Rutgers
The Skinny: Davis is a mammoth offensive tackle and some may consider this a bit of a slide. The 49ers will grab their franchise left tackle.

2 -17. CB Dominique Franks, Oklahoma
The Skinny: Corner is a position of high need for the 49ers, and the secondary gets an injection of talent in the first two rounds.
